Trump again blamed “both sides” of the Charlottesville protests for the violence that took place there. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian, the hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. https://tytnetwork.com/join/

“President Trump angrily defended himself on Tuesday against criticism that he did not specifically condemn Nazi and white supremacist groups following the weekend’s deadly racial unrest in Virginia, and at one point questioned whether the movement to pull down statues of Confederate leaders would escalate to the desecration of George Washington.

In a long, combative exchange with reporters at Trump Tower in Manhattan, the president repeatedly rejected a torrent of bipartisan criticism for waiting two days before naming the right-wing groups and placing blame on “many sides” for the violence on Saturday that ended with the death of a young woman after a car crashed into a crowd.

He said that “before I make a statement, I like to know the facts.”

And he criticized “alt-left” groups that he claimed were “very, very violent” when they sought to confront the nationalist and Nazi groups that had gathered in Charlottesville, Va., to protest the removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee from a park. He said there is “blame on both sides.”

“Many of those people were there to protest the taking down of the statue of Robert E. Lee,” Mr. Trump said. “This week, it is Robert E. Lee and this week, Stonewall Jackson. Is it George Washington next? You have to ask yourself, where does it stop?” he said, noting that the first American president had owned slaves.”

  1. Hey TYT team,

speaking as a German citizen, my worldview toppled when I witnessed a president finding excuses for neo-nazis. A nation that gave a tremendous sacrifice to defeat the evil NAZI-ideology of my granddaddies.
We learnt in school the USA was a safe place for everyone persecuted by Hitler’s henchmen, and it was their willingness for sacrifice which prevented the world from the darkest nightmare of all times.

We learnt the USA stood up for whats right, their soldiers showed my grandma what was going on in Bergen-Belsen, Dachau or Auschwitz. They prosecuted the perpetrators and told us what democracy looks like. Of course, there are many dark chapters in US history, but this narrative helped us building the DNA of our society and helped us forming the Germany of today.

If there was one nation that took a stand for democracy against racism, it is the USA.

It is absolutely surreal to me it took only 7 months of “No45″s presidency to shatter the foundations of what we believed the USA stands for. Well, I’m still hoping for a cure…

How much lower must a president sink until someone pulls the plug ?

Europeans should not lecture America about democracy, but: I think it is time to seriously rethink the electoral process and the “First-past-the-post voting” principle that allows only two political groups to be eligible. Life is so much more than the GOP and GOP-light. Thats why many nations have multi-party governments and a coalition of ideas rather a running battle about the smallest things.
The US constitution did not come from god. It can be changed.

Cant’ wait for “POTUS 46” to arrive.

Thanks for reading my thoughts, you guys are awesome. Big hug to everyone of you. Shame we still dont have TYT-Europe.

    best from Germany
