A woman who pretended to be a man to seduce her best friend into having sex with her has just been sentenced. Gayle Newland forced her friend to wear a blindfold and used a strap on penis to have sex with her. Her friend did not know it was her and is accusing Newland of raping her. She has been sentenced to 8 years in prison. Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian (The Point), Ben Mankiewicz (What The Flick!?), and Judah Friedlander (If The Raindrops United) hosts of The Young Turks discuss.

Do you think it is indeed rape? How long should her sentence have been? Let us know in the comments below.

“A judge has sentenced a former private schoolgirl to eight years in prison for duping another woman into believing she was a man before and having sex with her using a prosthetic penis.

Marketing manager Gayle Newland, 25, screamed ‘I’m scared’ to her family and had to be dragged to the cells after begging for a suspended sentence.

It has now been revealed that the presiding judge who handed her the lengthy jail term has previously given more lenient sentences to paedophiles – and once handed a teacher who abused 24 boys aged between eight and 13 to just six and a half years in prison.”

  1. So where does this end?

Do we convict a man of rape because when the woman gave consent, she was stupid enough to believe he was a billionaire or british spy and later felt betrayed when she discovered he was nothing more than a middle class frat boy?

Do we consider it rape when a partner claims, “When I gave consent, I was tricked into thinking he loved me.”

Is it only rape when it’s a physical lie? “I didn’t know he was blonde.”, “I thought his penis was 8″, not 6.”

And if manipulation of physical aspects apply, possibly targeting LGBTQ-etc community, then what if….

    what if this story was,

“I agreed to the blindfold, I consented 10 times to great sex, but I didn’t know he was a black man! He said he was white! Rape! Rape!” followed by an 8 year sentence to jail.

I’m with Ben. Not even an hour in jail. This is insane.

  2. This is just awful. I wonder if this judge maybe just has a hate on for the LGBTQ community? Obviously what she did was rape which should never go unpunished, but really, 8 years?! And a paedophile gets 6.5?! That’s just ludicrous.

What this woman did was wrong, no doubt… but I understand a little. I identify as pansexual and genderfluid. I live in a small, conservative city that loves their Christian family values, and I also know that love can be a very powerful feeling that makes people do stupid things. If this girl is a closeted lesbian, bisexual or trans individual (or even somewhere in between) that can take a serious mental and emotional toll on a person. I’m not saying what she did was right… you should never have to trick someone into having sex with you… but was this girl ever given a mental health assessment?

    1. It’s not obvious what she did was rape. She manipulated, but they both had consent. 10 times. You kidding me?

Consent 10 times in a row, no force, full consent, obviously enjoyed it (it wasn’t once, it was 10 times.)’

She agreed to be blind folded. 10 times. Full consent.

      She’s a liar. She’s manipulative. She’s NOT a rapist.
