Less than six hours of deliberations, and the jury returned in the first-degree murder retrial of Michael Dunn with a guilty verdict.
Dunn was accused of shooting and killing 17-year-old Jordan Davis in 2012 during an argument over loud music outside of a Jacksonville convenience store.
It was the second time this year a jury had to try and decide on the first-degree murder charge against Dunn.
Prosecutors and Dunn’s attorneys gave their closing arguments Tuesday afternoon, just hours after Dunn took the stand in his own defense. Dunn testified — like he did during the first trial — that he shot Davis out of fear for his own life.
The first jury that heard the case against Dunn convicted him on three attempted murder charges for shooting at Davis’ three friends, but the jury couldn’t reach a unanimous verdict on the murder charge for Davis’ death.
It was a different jury and a different trial this time. The jury took less than six hours to find Dunn guilty.
“Words cannot express our joy but also our great sorrow because with verdicts of all counts being guilty for Michael Dunn, we know that Jordan has received justice,” said Davis’ mother Lucia Bath. “We know what Jordan’s life and legacy will live on for others but we are also very saddened by the life that Michael Dunn will continue to live.”
Dunn, who lives in Satellite Beach, was already facing at least 60 years in prison for the three attempted-murder convictions. A hearing Oc. 17 will set the sentencing date for the first-degree murder conviction.
