Sam Pepper – former Big Brother contestant turned YouTube prank star – faced accusations of sexual assault for posting a clip in which he pinches a number of women from behind. What’s more concerning is that Laci Green and Dotti Martin (who’ve worked with him previously) put out videos raising concerns about Pepper’s character. Pop Trigger talks about why people are afraid to speak out before a scandal reaches a tipping point, as well as other social factors underlying Pepper’s behavior.

  1. Excellent points on humanizing the experiences of women who had to face these incredibly uncomfortable and unethical situation. That being said, in return to Pepper’s excuse — that it was a social experiment, even social and psychological experiments in any professional setting, need to be approved by a review board to protect against outcomes like this. With sensible reason.

Historically before review boards and ethics members were even “a thing,” anyone could go conduct their own experiments however racist, hurtful, or violent they were and say that it was all in the name of science and research.

Even getting consent forms are complicated because some people may not be able to understand what consenting is, or miscalculate what their response would be to the situation (they believe they’ll be fine but post-situation, feel uncomfortable, which is completely natural and fine).
