“Desecration” is still a crime in the United States. A 14-year-old boy from Everett, Pa., was arrested after mimicking oral sex with a statue of Jesus. He now faces up to two years in jail. The criminal charge: “Desecration of a Venerated Object.”

Back in July, the unidentified minor posted photographs of himself with a statue of Jesus at the Everett branch of the “Love in the Name of Christ” church.

  1. Well John, I’ll explain. The law of desecration exists today for actually a pretty good reason. Religious people, for whatever reason they have, hold their religious icons in high esteem. Be it Jesus, Pan or Buddah or even Satan since there IS a church of Satan now, they all have icons that they deem as important representations of their faith. To “Desecrate” something implies you are actively trying to ruin the meaning of whatever that thing is for the people who worship it. If this law did not exist, then people could go around doing all sorts of horribly stupid, vulgar and overtly insulting acts with or on them and there’s nothing that can be done against it. Now, whether or not you believe in a god, or whether or not I believe in a god is irrelevant. Because we have a thing called “religious freedom” which allows everyone to worship whatever they want to free of persecution. This means that their religious icons are under the protection of religious freedom, and thus it IS a crime to “Desecrate” these icons.

Think back John. Repeatedly, you have said that everyone needs to respect everyone else within reason. Just because you and I won’t take offense to this, it does not mean we should allow it to happen. There IS a line, and that line CAN be crossed. Desecration IS crossing the line because you are taking a symbol of faith and ruining it. I don’t care what people worship, I’m a Dythiest and I look at the idea of “God’s or godlike beings” as things for humanity to challenge and overcome. I do not think that IF there is a God or Godlike being, that it is even remotely friendly or cares about us, and I think all religion is man made fiction. BUT I do still understand the need for some people to believe in something. I believe in my own personal strength, and the strength and potential of mankind as a whole. Not everyone can do this, and I understand that those with lesser fortitude than me latch onto something spiritual. While I don’t support this, I would persecute anyone who is blatantly disrespectful in this regard. If we are going to have equality, and freedom and peace, that means we have to respect all reasonable values AND defend them. That means whether or not you care is irrelevant. If you feel strongly about something, and someone desecrates it, why should anyone else care about it? Simple. IF we are going to pride ourselves on our potential, we have standards that we set and we hold to. This is one such standard. While I may not share the same religious views as many people, I defend and believe in their right to have those views. I will debate with them as much as I can, but I will not simply destroy their icons. If you want to change someone’s opinion, forcibly trying is not the way. You have to ACTUALLY convince them to change. For this reason, yes, their religious icons deserve to be protected by the Desecration laws.

Now if you don’t mind sir, please maintain and stick to a freaking opinion. Your opinion jumps every which way and flip flops constantly. It it unsightly and annoying for anyone who pays attention, and anyone who listens to your news broadcast. It makes it VERY difficult to believe anything you say, or to take anything seriously, when you can change your stance so quickly and fervently that it becomes a 180 degree turn. Stop. Changing. Your. Stories. Stop. Changing. Your. Stance. For. No. Good. Reasons. Thank you.

    1. I disagree with your rant against John 100%. I am offended by the desecration of science that takes place in Ken Ham’s Creation Museum, but that doesn’t mean that he should be jailed for it. Saying that people should respect others in no way conflicts with saying that the government shouldn’t jail people for offending someone by simulating a sex act with a statue. If people do it repeatedly, then they could prosecute them for trespassing, or move the statue inside. I’m not saying that I support what the kid did, it was rude and inconsiderate, but it shouldn’t be considered a crime. There is no right under the constitution to go through life never being offended by anyone, nor should there be. If someone is trespassing, or engaging in vandalism, then they should be prosecuted. If they just offended you, then tough luck, sucks for you. Maybe they shouldn’t have done it, but the law should have nothing to say about it.
