One in every 77 people in South Korea now goes under the knife. Some of these operations are so extreme that hospitals are offering ‘plastic surgery certificates’ to help overseas patients through passport control on their way home.

See some before and after photos of the extreme plastic surgery in the video.

About 20% of women aged 19 to 49 in Seoul admit to getting plastic surgery. Have you ever had plastic surgery? Would you ever consider it?

  1. As I was watching this discussion, I was missing a side to the issue that I regard to be an important aspect: What makes people in a society want to change their appearence by such drastic means as plastic surgery?

Having plastic sugery involves risks and it has high costs. Yet people choose to have these surgeries performed. I would rather look at the reasons for why people do this than to regard it as a positive change that will make these people feel better about themselves. Isn’t there something wrong with society when people feel that drastic measures such as plastic surgery needs to be done in order to feel well about one’s personal appearence?

In addition, I also think it is important to look at how people’s choices affect others. I regard it as a social problem if people feel pressure to undergo unnecessary surgery (unnecessary in the sence that the surgery performed will not save lives or enhance physical dysfunction) involving risks.
