1 in 25 Sentenced to Death Are Innocent

A new study, released in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, finds that 1 in 25 (about 4%) of people in the U.S. that are sentenced to death are innocent.

Many people sentenced to death ultimately have their sentences reduced to life in prison, at which point the criminal justice system stops focusing on their cases and their chances of being exonerated drops dramatically.

Does our criminal justice system need to treat life in jail just as seriously as the death sentence?
