Tupac Shakur could have been a Jedi. According to one of Shakur’s recording engineers, the late rapper was in talks for a role in Star Wars: Episode I, playing the part later taken by Samuel L Jackson.

In an interview with users at 2Pac-Forum (via Rolling Stone), Rick Clifford, chief engineer at Death Row Records, recalled a conversation with Shakur from the mid-1990s. “We always talked about [Tupac’s] film career and stuff,” he said. “He was telling me that he was supposed to read for George Lucas and them. They wanted him to be a Jedi … I’m serious. Samuel L got Tupac’s part … He said, ‘Old man, keep your fingers crossed.’ He said, ‘I’ve got three movies coming up. One of em, I gotta read for George Lucas.'”

If these claims are true, Shakur was set to follow up his acting appearances in the films Juice and Poetic Justice by portraying Mace Windu, one of Yoda’s peers on the Jedi High Council. But Shakur never got the chance to wield a lightsaber: the filming of Episode I – The Phantom Menace began only in June 1997, nine months after the MC was died in Las Vegas.

Jackson went on to appear in all three Star Wars prequels and hopes to squeeze into the cast of the upcoming Episode VII, directed by JJ Abrams. Neither the actor nor Star Wars’ production company, Lucasfilm, have yet to comment on the Tupac story story.

  1. Nay. Thou hast chosen a moniker which suitest thee not.

I don’t know what it is, but there is just something about the word “nay” that always makes me want to talk like I’m at Renfest.

  2. I’m with Jayar on this one, I appreciate the attempt, but Cenk’s got enough nicknames already.

An actual poll would’ve been nice, are we not using the TYT app anymore?

  3. Here’s a suggestion: This whole movement started to get money out of politics and elect more progressives in the Congress. In other words, TYT is trying to shake things up in Washington and the Democratic party. So if we’re going with a wordplay on Tupac Shakur’s name, let the nickname be ‘Two Pack Shaker’.

    What say you?

  4. Don’t see the poll… but nay on tupac or 2pac as a nickname for Cenk. Sorry Cenk, love you guys though!

And I like the tshirt and blazer combo!
