Berkeley psychology professor Paul Piff studies the ways disparities in wealth, social status and achievement levels affect feelings of empathy, self-interest and entitlement. In a recent TED talk, Piff reveals the results of a study he conducted in which participants play a “rigged” game of Monopoly where one player is given a series of substantial advantages over another.
In this segment the panel discusses whether Piff’s conclusions about the differences between rich and poor are warranted by the evidence, and what his research suggests about income inequality, market-based capitalism and human nature itself.
