“A satanic group unveiled designs Monday for a 7-foot-tall statue of Satan it wants to put at the Oklahoma state Capitol, where a Ten Commandments monument was placed in 2012.

The New York-based Satanic Temple formally submitted its application to a panel that oversees the Capitol grounds, including an artist’s rendering that depicts Satan as Baphomet, a goat-headed figure with horns, wings and a long beard that’s often used as a symbol of the occult. In the rendering, Satan is sitting in a pentagram-adorned throne with smiling children next to him.

“The monument has been designed to reflect the views of Satanists in Oklahoma City and beyond,” temple spokesman Lucien Greaves said in a statement. “The statue will also have a functional purpose as a chair where people of all ages may sit on the lap of Satan for inspiration and contemplation.””* The Young Turks hosts Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian break it down.

  1. Actually, with this particular challenge, Oklahoma could easily refuse the display without 1st Amendment issues, simply by making it a rule that requested displays come from Oklahoma residents, which would actually be a reasonable requirement for a display at the state Capitol. (This was requested by a group in New York).

It would also make the point better if an old, established non-Christian religion – like Hindu or Islam – requested a display. Since the Satanism thing looks more like an attempt to attack someone ELSE’s beliefs rather than display your own. Whereas I’m sure there are Hindus and Muslims in Oklahoma who would like a display for reasons of celebrating their OWN religion, instead of just doing something “in-your-face” to offend Christians.

  2. [Lutherans say Baptists and Catholics are out.]

    That is simply not true.

[Pentecostals say Lutherans are out. ]

No, they don’t. Most Pentecostals would say that some Lutherans are going to heaven and some aren’t

[ Catholics say no Jews or Muslims or Baptists, and on and on. ]

    That is also false.

    Sorry.

  3. I always thought Christians had this backward. Their god is bigoted. Mean spirited. Egotistical. Most Christians will tell you the only way to their god is through their beliefs – Lutherans say Baptists and Catholics are out. Pentecostals say Lutherans are out. Catholics say no Jews or Muslims or Baptists, and on and on. But Satan loves everyone. He doesn’t care if you’re white or EurAsian or AfroMerican or MexiAsian or AfriMexican or whatever. You could be gay or straight or trans-cross-operated. He takes everyone. Loves everyone. Equal. Many Christians will claim their god is like that as they tell you that you’ll burn in hell if you don’t worship and believe as they do. So which is the real loving god?
All those bumper stickers that say JESUS LOVES are wrong. It’s really Satan that loves. Just like Santa. Maybe that’s why they’re both in red?
