Can The Mainstream News Media Police Itself?

On a recent episode of CNN’s Reliable Sources, NPR’s David Folkenflik interviewed Eric Stern, a Salon writer who bothered to fact check some of the more outlandish claims made on Sean Hannity’s show about the alleged failures of Obamacare. But instead of discussing Hannity’s duplicity, the interview became a discussion of whether outright lying might be acceptable on an “opinion” show.

Which raises the question: can the corporate media, with its countless conflicts of interest and adherence to a no-longer-valid standard of “objectivity,” do even a passable job at policing itself and rooting out the lies, disinformation and duplicity that characterize so much of what mainstream media outlets pass off as “news” and “reporting.?”
