Gay men may be allowed to donate blood for the first time since 1983 when the FDA banned them from donating blood in response to HIV and AIDS. Some members on an FDA advisory committee favored changes to the policy that would not threaten the safety of the blood supply and suggested a solution that would permit donations from men who have gone a year or more without having sex with another man.
