Taylor Swift, the pop princess behind Shake It Off and 1989, has pulled her music from Spotify, but what is this reasoning behind her removing her music from the digital music player? The answer may have to do with the profit sharing deal with major labels Spotify has recently put in place, and the fact that Swift is on an independent label (Big Machine). Spotify may be much less lucrative for record companies that operate outside of the big 3 labels (Warner, Sony & Universal), and with musicians and labels complaining of tiny royalty rates from getting plays on Spotify, the move might make good business sense for the singer and record company that are set to have one of the biggest selling albums of the year. We look at the decision and the business sense behind it with Mark Sovel and Elliot Hill on the Lip News.
