Do you think Ma’lik Richmond should be allowed back on the Steubenville High School football team? Take our poll at http://tytnetwork.com/malikrichmondpoll. Then tell us what you think in the comments section below.

“One of the Steubenville High School students convicted in a high-profile, March 2013 rape is now back on the football field.

Ma’Lik Richmond, 18, who, along with Trent Mays, was convicted of raping a 16-year-old girl in Steubenville, Ohio, has rejoined the roster of the Steubenville Big Red football team as a wide receiver, according to WTRF TV.

The case fueled an intense national debate about online bullying after hacker group Anonymous exposed photos and videos made the night girl was raped. The images showed two males carrying the inebriated victim by her wrists and ankles and other teens making jokes at the girl’s expense.

Richmond’s return to the football field is disappointing to Alexandria Goddard, a blogger credited with bringing national attention to the controversial rape case.” *

  1. The problem is that too little rehabilitation of the victim has been even attempted while way too much rehabilitation of the perpetrator’s football career has been done without even thinking about the consequences.

The problem at the core of the physical abuse is the treatment that college football receives. The school’s directors are willing to cover up, minimize or even commit crimes to keep the football stars while effectively ruining the chances of the victim to salvage anything of her life. And then, when the football star is available again they grab him before he has even time to unpack. They are not rehabilitating the person, they are rehabilitating the business opportunity.

A real school would not have helped in the cover-up, would have protected the victim, and would have attempted rehabilitation of the perpetrator by placing him as far away from his old life as possible. Reconstructing the scene for more rapes is not rehab.

  2. Seriously? Where’s the actual justice? Hell, where are the feminists? Even the most ridiculous ones would certainly be justified in this. And how the hell do the administrators feel that it’s okay to let rape go by to save their football team? This goes beyond bystander apathy.

  3. I hate football. I grew up in West Texas where high school football was, and I’m pretty sure still is, EVERYTHING. I never understood it then and I don’t now.

But the kid did his time!!! Not defending his actions at all but there has to be some point at which he can go on with his life. If we aren’t willing to allow someone to fully reintegrate (especially in cases involving minors) then let us all be honest with ourselves and admit we don’t give a shit about rehabilitation, we just want to exact revenge.

The idea that he should be run out of town leaves me speechless. That solves what problem exactly?
