12-year-old Lauren Arrington brings some positive attention to Florida with her discovery that venomous, predatory lionfish can survive in bodies of water with low salt content, unlike previously believed. Now she’s been credited in the Environmental Biology of Fishes journal for her discovery.
After discovering the saltwater fish in the freshwater Loxahatchee river, Lauren observed the fish’s food intake while lowering the salt content in water she observed them in for two weeks. She discovered that doing so had no effect.
Lionfish have threatened coral reefs in the ocean, but now, thanks to Lauren, adult biologists are paying attention to lionfish in freshwater bodies. Pretty cool.
