“The star of A&E’s hit reality show Duck Dynasty was suspended from the show Wednesday after making anti-gay statements in an interview with GQ, the network said.

Phil Robertson was placed “under hiatus from filming indefinitely” A&E said in a statement Wednesday according to Deadline. “His personal views in no way reflect those of A+E Networks, who have always been strong supports and champions of the LGBT community,” the statement said.”* The Young Turks hosts Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian break it down.

  1. the show, i think, is about louisiana rednecks (aka: coonasses). i think they pride themselves in their redneckness. rednecks was at one point in time a term used to describe ignorant, racist people. of couuuuuuuurrrrrrrrsssssseeeee they are homophobic and racist. how can a&e have a show about rednecks and think they don’t have these thoughts? what’s the point of suspending phil if you have a show about rednecks?

  2. Once again, I think TYT covers this better than anyone. Good job! I love how you don’t shy away from nuanced opinions and I also love how Cenk and Ana can disagree and have a civil debate. Thanks!

As a Christian, I’m particularly thrilled with Cenk’s comments about the Bible. He’s absolutely right that it’s a document written by men and compiled by other men at the direction of a dictator with a clear political agenda. It’s not infallible, or inerrant. There’s some awful stuff in there — however, it’s also filled with beauty and truth. Personally, I love the Bible and I get a lot of value from it by reading it as a combination of mythology, storytelling and proverbs. That being said, just because it works for me I don’t expect everyone to have the same path. I have tremendous respect for people of other faiths or of no faith who find the same compassion for others and the love of justice that I find in the Bible. Honestly I find more in common with a lot of secular humanists than I do with other Christians – but I hope everyone at TYT and all their viewers realize not all Christians are hateful bigots.
