Comic Con NYC is coming up this October! Here’s how to get the perfect look – with these closet cosplay suggestions from DC Comics (specifically, Batman!). Yes, do-it-yourself is just as fun… plus DIY is cheaper! And for those of you who can’t make it for the bonanza of amazing cosplay – never fear! We say you dress up and make your own parties… no matter where you are in the world.

In this episode, Styleogue NYC host Bec Susan Gill sits down with closet cosplay costume expert Jamie Mountain to get either Batgirl, Catwoman or Poison Ivy costumes made from of clothing that was purchased or found in your closet. This involves little to no alteration of the clothing.

Here’s what Jamie discusses:

Catwoman: “The two main ideas here are “black and tight.” You’ll need some sort of black leggings; pleather, wet look, or spandex work best, but any tight stretchy black pants would be fine. Next is a tight black long-sleeved top. Catwoman wears a zip-up top, so if you have one of those, great; if not, go for either a really deep v or a very high neckline: either the idea that the top is zipped down or zipped up. For shoes, aim for black heeled boots or black pumps with black socks tucked into the bottom of your leggings. Basically, we want one long line of black without skin breaking it up. Throw on a black belt to cover up where the top meets the pants to give the illusion it is all one piece, throw on a mask, and you are good to go.”

Batgirl: “This one has a little bit more leeway, since having a yellow bat on your chest makes it a lot easier for people to tell who you are. You can wear either black pants or a black skirt for this, anything you can move easily in. Next you need a black top with a yellow bat signal. If you want to get fancy, you can paint or sew this on, but you can also get away with just printing one our from the internet and taping it on. Add yellow accessories and shoes if you have them, black if you don’t. Take any piece of black or yellow fabric and pin it to your shoulders, not your neck. I once used a black maxi skirt as a cape and it worked pretty well for this.”

Poison Ivy: “One for all you red heads out there! All you need is a short green dress and some leaves from your local craft store. You can sew these leaves on to look especially authentic, but you can also get a vine of leaves and wrap it around your arms and shoulders, keeping your dress intact. Throw on some green tights or leggings for added effect, some green or brown boots, and the signature red lipstick, and you’re good to go.”

More about the characters featured in this video:

Catwoman (Selina Kyle) is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics, commonly in association with the superhero Batman. Catwoman has traditionally been portrayed as a supervillain and adversary of Batman, but since the 1990s, she has been featured in an eponymous series that cast her as an antiheroine rather than a traditional villain. Catwoman is known for having a complex love-hate relationship with Batman and has been Batman’s most enduring love interest.

Poison Ivy (Pamela Lillian Isley) is a fictional supervillain appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics, commonly as an adversary of the superhero Batman. Poison Ivy is one of Batman’s most enduring enemies and is depicted as one of the world’s most notorious eco-terrorists. She is obsessed with plants, botany, and environmentalism. She uses toxins from plants and mind controlling pheromones for her criminal activities, which are usually aimed at protecting the natural environment.

Batgirl is the name of several fictional superheroes appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics, depicted as female counterparts to the superhero Batman. The character operates primarily in Gotham City, allying herself with Batman and the original Robin, as well as other prominent heroes in the DC Universe.
