“Cenk Uygur (http://www.twitter.com/cenkuygur) host of The Young Turks discusses the official portrait of former President Bill Clinton completed in 2006 that is under scrutiny since it has been revealed that it includes a subtle nod to the Monica Lewinsky scandal.
The artist, Nelson Shanks, finally revealed in an interview with the Philadelphia Daily News something that he has been keeping under his hat for awhile: the shadow covering the Oval Office mantle in the painting is the shadow from the blue dress that Lewinsky wore during her affair with the President. Shanks said in the interview that the shadow was both literally the dress she wore, but also metaphorical of the shadow that fell over Clinton’s time in office.
Shanks mentioned that the Clintons ‘hate the portrait’. He failed to mention whether this is because of the subtle jab at them or not.”
