OSU Students React To Big Win, Did The Police Overreact?

“Authorities used tear gas early today to disperse thousands of Buckeye fans on N. High Street along campus celebrating Ohio State’s win over Oregon.

Shortly after midnight, police began using pepper spray on many of the party-goers. Some left the area with stinging eyes and runny noses. Others stayed and just seemed to move to other areas along N. High Street.”

  1. This was a gathering that was in the making fo a while. You can’t live there and not know when football games are being played, especially one as significant as this. The cops had time to prepare some sort of celebratory plan for the post game hours but apparently didn”t. I saw a comment here stating 89 fires were set that night but hadn’t seen or heard anything about it on any news. If that truly was the case than this may have been an appropriate response but the video we saw was very short and does not reflect all the events that night.. I think anytime you use pepper spray, mace, tasers, rubber bullets etc. on crowds of unarmed citizens it better be for a good reason which I don’t think was the case here.

  2. By the way, there were 89 fires set that night and if you want to see what the cops had to deal with google ohio state riot and check out the photos.

  3. This is nothing new. Come here any year after the michigan game. The cops know what they are doing. They probably were asking the kids to get out of the street long before the pepper spray came out. These idiots have a long history of property destruction and setting fires not to mention the fighting. As for their right to gather…that’s fine and there are many places to do so, but NOT on HIgh street. It is THE main street to get anywhere in the area. They are not “innocently passing by” They are blocking traffic. Cent doesn’t live here and has no fucking clue what he is talking about. High street isn”t even close to the stadium!! Let them gather in the oval or along Lane Avenue, which is another main thoroughfare closer to the stadium. There is a long history of problems associated with osu games, so if you don’t know what you are talking about maybe you should just keep your loud mouth shut.

  4. I live in Columbus near the campus. You can’t go out, you can’t get home, your property gets damaged. I’ve seen previous games where cars (Michigan plates) were hit by baseball bats. My neighbor’s porch furniture was set on fire after a rival game. I had a car mirror broken during a game riot.

They need to get out of the damn streets and go to a house party. FOOTBALL is not an excuse for these riots. I’m not saying pepper spray them, but GET OUT OF THE STREET AND STOP SETTING FIRES. STOP DAMAGING PROPERTY. The only time Columbus is in the news is when idiot sport fans act like this. At least once a season…

[I particularly like how when it’s mostly white people celebrating football we call them “students” and “celebrants” and in Ferguson they’re all “rioters.” (In general, not so much on TYT.)]

  5. They have a right to celebrate, but they don’t have a right to break the law by blocking traffic (and emergency vehicles). The police reaction wasn’t perfect, but the “celebrators” were being assholes by creating an unnecessary hazard.

  6. They completely over reacted. There were no fires in the area where they were peper spraying.
Watch the cops on the video. They’re spraying as if they were watering their lawn on a Saturday afternoon.
I usually side with Ana, but this time she’s dead wrong.
She’s acting like an elite brat.
Listen, I’m no fan of sports, but as a former “Buckeye”, they have every right to celebrate. Finally a win for Ohio, because the Browns will probably never win a championship!
