Cenk, I have to disagree with you about the blackmail idea. Yeah, the guy’s memes are reprehensible, however, he’s a private citizen sitting behind a username, and people in the younger age group often don’t look at these memes as containing serious messaging. With how good people on the internet (and Reddit in specific) are at finding full information on a person from something as simple as a real first and last name, CNN’s threatening to release it if this person continues making stupid memes *IS* just as bad as the rest of The_Donald Doxxing their reporters. You see how easy it is for Reddit to find the reporters true addresses, it’s just as easy for them to find it for this guy. And a good portion of that site does not at all agree with this person’s views, and wouldn’t be afraid of threatening him. Remember, they don’t even have to do it in person these days – Swatting is a thing, a terrible, reprehensible, really damn easy thing.
CNN telling this person that if he continues attacking them they will release his true name is exactly the same thing as telling Bernie Sanders that if he continues attacking the banks, they will release the full names of his grandchildren to Reddit. Imagine how much hell idiots on the internet can, and have made for people with very spotty information. Remember, it was Reddit who went on that witch hunt after the Boston Bombing falsely accusing a guy, who it turned out was dead, of placing the bombs.
If CNN REALLY doesn’t want the guy making terrible memes about them anymore, what they should do is the legal thing, and privately go after the guy for infringement of copyright, and possibly legal slander. They should not threaten to publicly reveal his name. The fact that public outing was where they went shows that they are indeed trying to blackmail the guy.
Pretty sure NPR decided to tweet the Declaration of Independence this year, in a desperate hope that Trump would actually read it, and maybe, just maybe, learn something.
Thank you!
All I got for the Beckham story is: tempest in a teapot. Oh wait…Much ado about NOTHING!
Brett’s comments on the Earhart story are indicative of someone who has no appreciation for how difficult communication was in the 30’s, or how easy it was for records to be destroyed in the the middle of a war. Did he think cameras were everywhere, and everyone was tweeting? There wasn’t even television or satellites in that era. People on that island might have not ever heard of Earhart, and both her and her navigator may have not given their real names. The theory proposed is far from certain for many reasons, but none of them are the ones mentioned by Brett.
Regarding Higgins- Cenk nailed my issue with it. Higgins’ sentiments echo German nationalist ideology. That’s what scares me. Recall that he (and unfortunately this panel) never used the words “Jew/ish” or “Holocaust.” His apology said it once but the terms he used were only “people” and “murdered.”
This wasn’t just “people” that were “murdered.”
It was millions of people of the same lineage, religion, as well as the disabled and gay, that were executed for those reasons and those reasons alone.
In a world of racism, anti-semitism, xenophobia, and homophobia, a world of holocaust deniers, the American relationship to Israel and Palestine, coded language and icons from the alt right and Reddit and 4chan groups that target these people, we can’t just gloss over the refusal to use the words “Jew” or “holocaust” in a propaganda video to “protect the homeland.”
I don’t normally comment on your coverage but I think this story is missing a very large factor of why this was such a negatively impactful move on behalf of Mr. Higgins.
Language and iconography are powerful tools in propaganda.
If you know anything of the holocaust you surely must know that.
The beginning music clip, anyone know where its from?
Not sure specifically but it sure sounds like Wendy Carlos, who took existing musical pieces, many of them classical, and played on moog synthesizer, back in 70s. You might start there.
Everyone knows Earheart was captured by delta quadrant aliens and put into stasis?! Those aliens got later defeated by other humans they also captured?! Those humans then built an earth like society…

Actually, I believe that was the President. Beckham’s daughter is 5.
Just realized I shouldn’t be commenting until after my free trial is over and I have become an actual CONTRIBUTING Member.
Thanks for the “Heads Up”, Cenk!
?
The odds of that reddit user actually being apologetic is pretty low. They’ll just switch to a back up username and continue on, maybe a little bit smarter. Originally horrible black comedy was funny because you thought no one sane would actually believe it, and now we’re horrified that more and more idiots actually believe it.
Only the right Dox? Are you insane Cenk? The left are known to doing this as well. Both sides do it. Look up Gamergate, hell look up the Evergreen College incident. Please do not think that the left is this bastion of hope and innocence when they do the exact same thing.
LOL, mention about David Beckham “controversy” to my Mum and was like I think is perfectly normal right? Mum was like; let me show you a picture of when you were 4 with your Dad kissing you on the lips.
I was like, Holy SHIT!! Look how adorable I AM!!
The panel seems to miss the critical point regarding the whole CNN dox story. In application, there is no such thing as a partial dox. Once somebody has identified a person online, 90% of the work has already been done. It’s elementary to connect the last dot, and if a CNN employee doesn’t do it themselves anonymously, someone else who doesn’t like this kid will. There are a lot of reasons for a lot of people not to like this kid. If he’s actually 15, then he has no recourse or protection like millionaire CNN senior staff do. Its a serious, irreversible threat, and the kid heard that dog whistle.
The notion of a news station retaliating against an individual child is a serious precedent maker, and it shouldn’t be taken lightly.
Second, Cenk was wrong when he said that only the right does dox terrorism. Both “left” and right do doxing on a regular basis. The Gamergate debacle was a perfect example of that. Anyone with a good head distanced themselves from the whole thing early on, but those that remained were all terrible people. That subset of chauvinists and feminists dox’ed each other, harrassed the employers of their targets and created fabricated legal charges. Both sides had the same excuse: “They did it first!”
The right arent the only ones who dox. Hateful people are the only ones who dox. It would be lovely and simple if all the hateful people are on the right, but the left does have an infestation of them too. It’s important to recognize that, or the left will suffer from poor quality control.
Thank you, you laid out much of what I wanted to say.
I got really annoyed by Cenk saying they shouldn’t have investigated the kid’s identity but now that they have it, hey go ahead and release it. No! It’s a stupid kid making a silly video. He didn’t hurt anybody. Leave the poor kid alone. Bad enough he’s got CNN threatening him.
My main contention with Cenk’s stance is that he gets too idealistic about the Left just… because. The Left is just as bad as the Right when it comes to doxxing. Both sides have extremists. If CNN outs HanisanidiotSolo’s identity… he – will – be doxxed by at least one of those Left-leaning extremists. The rest is easy for horrible people to take advantage of once the name is out there.
And if he’s actually a 15 year old? Not sure of the evidence in either direction or if he’s a kid or just an ass, but you’re right regardless. It’s a corporation versus a lone teenager who makes silly memes…
That’s psychotic.
Supporting a corporation who is threatening to expose a kid to the full wrath of not only the media, but the fanatics who send death threats and poison pets and torment you in real life, is psychotic. Be better than that, Cenk.
It’s bad regardless of side. Do not excuse this sort of thing….
“Supporting a corporation who is threatening to expose a kid to the full wrath of not only the media, but the fanatics who send death threats and poison pets and torment you in real life, is psychotic. Be better than that, Cenk”
The sad thing is, he’s clearly not better than that. The fact that he accepts corporate doxxing threats given that the target is a shitty person is just despicable.
Doxxing is illegal for a reason, it doesn’t magically become OK if your target happens to be an asshole. Having a massive media conglomerate wield that power is infinitely worse than the 4chan crowd doing the same. The fact that they’re insufferably snotty about it is the worst of all:
“CNN is not publishing HanAssholeSolo’s name because he is a private citizen who has issued an extensive statement of apology (…) CNN reserves the right to publish his identity should any of that change”
I may be an “easily offended Liberal crybaby”, but at least I’m not offended by the Declaration of Independence.
I’m with you on the David Beckham story, but that is exactly why… Let’s just say you’d find a picture of a 5-year old Ivanka kissing her daddy on the lips, YOU’d be the ones flipping out, you would be calling it creepy – now it’s the other way around, the people finding it creepy are the creeps. I’m pretty sure there are Republicans, Trump supporters, people who thought the exact same thing about people commenting on “This Bizarre Photo Of Donald And Ivanka Trump Next To Parrots”… too much hypocrisy in the world…
I don’t think this is really hypocrisy…Beckham hasn’t repeatedly said he wanted to date his daughter.
Yeah, I think it’s the context that kinda matters with Trump-Ivanka lol
In fact, the TYT people have openly acknowledged that it’s the context that makes things creepy. They showed a picture of Ivanka sitting on her dad’s lap in her teens and they all said with any other father-daughter it would be a cute picture but you can’t walk back saying you want to have sex with your daughter and it then changes the context of anything between them when she was younger. Not everything is hypocrisy people are able to see context and come to two separate conclusions on two seemingly similar things
See the problem with political ideology?
How did you guys know from my comment, that I was talking about TYT’s hypocrisy? Maybe I was talking about Trump supporters hypocrisy? Or Beckham haters? :-)
There is a danger in interpreting things “in context”, because part of that context is our own ideology and societal narratives, previous interpretations and implications that together build a cohesive worldview, but are not necessarily actually factually true or go beyond what is…
Fuck you Brett you made me spit out my ginger ale lol XD
That description of Ted Cruz should be really the introduction to every story Ted Cruz is mentioned in, “don’t know any of the facts, such a blowhard, such an annoying phony politician” wasn’t that his campaign slogan?
