A recent poll revealed that many Americans believe that free speech should be curtailed on college campuses. The idea is to create a safe zone for students to feel safe but critics say this violates the principles of higher education. Ana Kasparian and John Iadarola (ThinkTank) hosts of The Young Turks discuss.

“A new poll finds that while diversity offices are generally seen as a waste of money, a majority of Americans nonetheless believes colleges should monitor and punish offensive speech.
The HuffPost/YouGov poll, which was conducted in December and released Monday, surveyed a random sample of 1,000 U.S. adults about their attitudes toward both the recent racial unrest on college campuses—exemplified by the protests at Mizzou and solidarity demonstrations elsewhere, but also encompassing separate incidents at schools like Brown and Yale—as well as their feelings about several common institutional responses to student complaints.”

I was glad to see this being discussed! While I was going to college at Georgia State University, there were religious-extremist protestors from outside the university that invaded our courtyard with picket signs screaming about how all gays and lesbians were going to hell. GSU has a relatively large gay and lesbian population, and I found it intolerable that our school had allowed these protestors into our courtyard. After all, this is a place where many gays and lesbians paid to go to school. Many of my fellow students got angry at me when I said that shouldn’t be allowed here, and gave me the slippery slope argument about limiting free-speech, and that frustrated me. I think there’s something to be said about limiting hate speech that can intimidate or hurt minorities, especially in one of the few places they might see as a safe zone in our society.
On another note, Georgia Tech had a student-run solution to similar problems on their campus, which I thought was ingenous and hilarious.
