With protests continuing across Chicago, Rahm Emanuel gave a speech today to show he understands their concerns, and that real change is on the way. Did he mean it? Well he kind of waited until his back was against the wall politically, so probably not. Cenk Uygur and John Iadarola, hosts of the The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
“Protesters poured into downtown Chicago calling for the resignation of Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Wednesday. Emanuel apologized for the death of Laquan McDonald, a teenager who was shot 16 times by the police, and for the dysfunction of the city’s police department.
“I own it. I take responsibility for what happened because it happened on my watch,” the mayor said. Anger over how the Chicago Police Department treats the city’s minorities came to a head in late November after video of an officer killing 17-year-old McDonald was released. On Monday, Attorney General Loretta Lynch announced a federal investigation into allegations of civil rights violations by the force.
On Wednesday, hundreds of protesters took the streets of Chicago again. They gathered outside where the mayor spoke, shouting “No more killer cops!” and “Rahm’s got to go.” The demonstration also traveled to social media where thousands are using the the hashtag #resignRahm.”*
