“The health care program for 9/11 first responders expired at midnight Wednesday, but supporters expect to make it permanent long before it runs out of money sometime next year.

Congress recessed without reauthorizing the James Zadroga Health and Compensation Act, which covers medical care for those who became sick after working at the World Trade Center following the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

Former “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart has made the program — named for a New York cop who died of a respiratory disease after he worked for almost a full month at Ground Zero — a public cause, personally lobbying lawmakers to act before its Oct. 1 “sunset” date.”

  1. Atrocious behavior from an electorate body who seems to only serve their own interests. I am a perpetual supporter of Social Security, Veterans, and these heroic First-Responders to the World Trade Center terrorist attack. It never ceases to amaze me, the hypocrisy of Congress and their lack of respect for one another on the opposite side of the Isle to set aside the petty differences and work together in a humane manner on a subject as this that is not really an issue at all. Why is it that Congress leaves unfinished business like this undone, before they have the audacity to leave Washington D.C.? I’m sorry that was rhetorical, they have a campaign and contributors to consider so they can stay and continue not doing their jobs. Just to continue the perpetual cycle of not getting anything done. It’s like the entire World has become so Stubborn, they resemble little children when they don’t get their way!!
