Speaking as someone who’s European and thus not completely obsessed with appearances – not everybody starts off looking as a supermodel in a relationship – you have people who are not 22 when they wed, people who are not size 2, people who may even, uh, I dunno, not wear makeup at all and for this be considered atrocious… But I did believe the story about the Japanese man freaking out when his gold-digging wife invested in her looks only to snare him. This, like Ana said, not so much. And you really don’t marry people simply because they’re pretty after two hours of maintenance and putting all their money in beauty products and shoes. You marry because you want this person to know you at your best and at your worst is great no matter what you look like, sex is great no matter what you look like, conversation is great no matter what you look like, traveling together is great no matter what you look like, going out for drinks and comparing what book you’re reading is great no matter what you look like, helping out on your parents’ farm is great no matter what you look like, sleeping next to someone else and being kissed on your skin is great no matter what you look like, cooking and eating together, listening to music, playing Warcraft together, swimming in the river together, taking dumb photos of the dog… This has nothing to do with what you look like at 22 or at 62 or at 102. Men who marry women just because they look great by their buddies’ standards, even if she is a total idiot, will regret it forever. And for a woman to marry Rocky Horror, and that’s the answer to all her needs, that’s just depressing. You’re not even allowed to admit that what if maybe you always liked something that doesn’t look like a Ken doll?
