“David Barton, the pet “historian” of Glenn Beck and the rabid right makes a living off of lying. Whether it’s lying about what the government can outlaw, lying about how much families on welfare get per year (twice) or completely revising American history to fit his ideology, Barton is well used to just making stuff up. His career is predicated on it.
On Sunday, he was at it again. During an appearance on Believer’s Voice of Victory with host, Kenneth Copeland, Barton made up ancient history. In trying to make his case that God hates retirement, he told Copeland:
“Retirement is not a biblical concept. That is a pagan concept that comes from the Babylonian system. If you want to live in Egypt, you want to live in Babylon, great, retire. God’s people, that is not a model.”
Babylonian? No. No, it’s not. From what we know of Babylonian culture, there is no mention of retirement as something the worker could or did do. What we do know is that the upper class merchant could afford to live as if he were retired.”*
