Cenk Uygur (host of The Young Turks) reverses his earlier opinion about Rachel Dolezal. News broke last week that Spokane NAACP leader Rachel Dolezal had been “faking” her African-American race for years. Cenk discusses new revelations in the story, and what caused him to change his original not-guilty verdict. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.

  1. Here is exactly what is going on: She is fetishizing blackness, obsessed with it. I have seen this over and over again with so many times before in so many situations with so many people. The little lies and work to set yourself up to look like you are in a situation, the fake victimization of yourself (faked hate mail, lied about parents, etc).
I’ve seen it a TON with people who get obsessed with Japanese culture, they ignore all the negatives and try to merge with the culture. I’ve seen it with people who fetishize barefooters with very negative results for all of us trying to just live our lives, etc.
She saw something she wanted to be a part of, and instead of learning from it and examining it objectively, they go hogwild into it, they go overboard, they lie and try to fit themselves into it, and everybody gets hurt. Not only did my ex do it with Japanese culture but I saw several classmates in a course about Japanese culture do the same thing, and they were unable to realize how the Japanese thought actually worked. They saw what they wanted to see.
She is wrong for doing many things she did, especially pretending to be something she isn’t and lying to back that up, she is wrong for lacking nuance and complex thought. She is wrong so many reasons. But still, she did apparently do plenty of good work. So I give her a D+ instead of an F as a human being.

  2. If the LGBT community can declare their sexual identity — with far less or even contradictory evidence — and be accepted then the far less significant identifier of race should be even more acceptable. All the negative comments bear a striking resemblance to what we’ve heard about the transgender community for years.
