“Cleanup of an oil spill that dumped tens of thousands of gallons of crude into the water near Santa Barbara continued in earnest Thursday as the slick spread to an area some nine miles wide, officials said.
About 90 feet of contaminated soil and 7,770 gallons of oily water mixture has been recovered from the oil spill cleanup near Santa Barbara, officials said at a news conference Thursday.
About 300 state and local contractors are working around the clock, but it will likely take months to restore the environment to its original condition, officials said.
Five oiled pelicans have been recovered and will be treated at a wildlife facility.
Officials requested the public to stay away from the affected areas. Public health is not at risk, authorities said.”
