It’s Her Fault She Was Gang Raped, Says Rapist From New Delhi Bus Incident

“Indian authorities ordered television stations Tuesday not to broadcast a documentary about a gang rape on a New Delhi bus in which one of the attackers blames the victim and says she could have avoided being killed if she had not fought back, a government official said.

The order followed an outcry over giving a convicted prisoner a nationwide platform to express repugnant views about a horrific crime that shocked Indians and prompted hundreds of thousands to take to the streets in protest. In response to the 2012 attack, India’s government rushed through legislation doubling prison terms for rapists to 20 years and criminalizing voyeurism, stalking and the trafficking of women.” *

  1. Instead of viewing the ban from a “freedom of speech” angle, look at it from a Indian Govt. perspective.

Try to look at it from a law and order perspective. Within 24 hours of this documentary’s release on internet a mob lynched a alleged rapist and killed him, which cannot be a co-incidence. this was what Government was trying to avoid.
The documentary filmmaker and BBC cannot be made accountable for this incident, can we?

You have to take into account not all states of equally developed, Some are backward. Even literacy rates vary from 65-95 among states.

People reacted to the hyper sensational publicity campaign run by a local news channel, Their ads only showed rapists’s and his lawyer’s comments and nothing else. Now imagine this ad being shown every 15 mins, basically insulting everyone who were emotionally involved with the victim for two months between December 2012 to jan 2013. We all went on the streets demanding justice not only in Delhi but thru out india. You have to understand that our activism is quite violent than in America. Majority of student protest in india always end up with baton charge and tear gas shells, because that is how we express things. You will have to remember that this country was born out of a revolution just 67 years back, and we still have strong student unions across the country inspired by socialism and communism.

By comparison WMMNYC’s ad on “India’s daughter” was very reasonable, it captured the crux of the issue. If this ad was used as publicity material, documentary would not have been banned in india.

And finally the rapist is on death row, and matter is sub-judice. That is the main reason of the ban. Nobody wants this guy to get away on a technicality, you never know. Stranger things have happened in life. If Ms.Udwin cared for the cause, what more justice than the rapist getting punished for his deeds. The documentary would have made a lot more sense after the guy gets hanged, sending the message that “Justice prevailed”. The fact that she sought permission for research and used it for commercial purposes does not help her case.

This episode will definitely raise a lot of Legal and journalism debates in india, only time will whether we will be able to find any answers. As far as this issue of Rape is concerned, we will have to acknowledge that even though problem is global, solutions from america cannot be applied in india and vice-versa.
