Social Security disability payments could be cut after Republicans bound themselves to a reform of the federal disability insurance program last week, on the first day of the new Congress. Essentially, the two Social Security components, the disability insurance program and the much larger Old Age and Survivors Insurance program, are treated as one system with money moving between the two if one is running short on funds and the other has plenty of money. The reform adds an obstacle to reallocating the money and if Congress doesn’t act, Social Security will be forced to cut disability payments to all recipients by about one fifth. We take a look at the rule change, in this Lip News clip with Jake Pentland and Gabriel Mizrahi.
