Girls on HBO returns for its season 4 premiere, Iowa. Are the characters in this show taking a step back? After making huge steps in maturity, this episodes harkens back to the first episode both in tone and in terms of jarringly awkward sex scenes. Marnie cries and breaks down after being taken down at a jazz brunch. Adam and Hannah have a moment (or lack thereof) that alludes to their relationship future– one way or the other. Are the characters ultimately unlikeable? Realistic? Regressive?
