“An off-duty Texas law enforcement officer who was caught on video using a chokehold while trying to get information from a witness has been allowed to resign instead of being fired.
In a video posted to YouTube last week, Nueces County Attorney’s Office investigator Gary Witherspoon can be seen in uniform placing Lanessa Espinosa in a chokehold while Corpus Christi Police Officer Jerry Lockhart attempted to obtain her identification.
Espinosa explained to the Corpus Christi Caller-Times that Lockhart was demanding to see her ID because she believed that she may have been involved in a fight at a restaurant on Aug. 16.”* The Young Turks hosts Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian break it down.

Ok Cenk, I’ve got to completely disagree with you here. Yes it would’ve been easier for her to just show her ID, BUT, one of the big problems that us as American citizens have is that we don’t know our rights, especially when it comes to the police. There are people who do know their rights and demand that they be respected by the police. If all American’s did this, there would not be such an issue with the police completely ignoring our rights. This woman probably would have never been put in a choke hold if EVERYONE stood up for their rights instead of taking the easy road! I have an enormous amount of respect for this woman and people like her that stand up for their rights, it takes so much courage, they’re willing to take the hard road so maybe someday the rest of us wont have to!
