China’s media regulators have banned puns and wordplay. The State Administration for Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television has restricted their use in television and advertising on the grounds that they breach the law on standard spoken and written Chinese, make promoting cultural heritage more difficult and may mislead young readers.
