Mace Windu’s purple light saber: Jackson asked Lucas for a purple lightsaber to stand out. It was not part of the expanded universe. However, in the expanded universe, lightsabers had different colors based on the crystal or item it used. Some items/ crystals made the beam wider, or more powerful. Often times crystals just gave the beam it’s unique color. The beam was a plasma beam but it served as a connection to the force, and as such if a Jedi picked up 100 different light sabers, each would be unique connected to the force because of the Jedi, not because of the saber. So Mace made his light saber special, not the other way around. One other thing on Mace is he studied and practiced the dark side, but never succumbed to it, making him far more capable in battle than Palpatine or even Anakin.
