I studied child development years before having my child. I used many of the suggestions to raise my dog, who was very well behaved, loving, and protective without knowing physical discipline. I don’t hit my child mostly because it’s so ineffective at arriving at the end goal: a well adjusted, independent thinking adult with a good relationship with me. Just because it would hurt me to inflict pain on my child does not make it the “tough love” answer. I just see it as resorting to violence because a person is too intellectually beaten by a child to respond any other way.
