“It’s more teatime than Terminator — a restaurant in China is electrifying customers by using more than a dozen robots to cook and deliver food.
Mechanical staff greet customers, deliver dishes to tables and even stir-fry meat and vegetables at the eatery in Kunshan, which opened last week.
“My daughter asked me to invent a robot because she doesn’t like doing housework,” the restaurant’s founder Song Yugang told AFP.
Two robots are stationed by the door to cheerfully greet customers, while four short but humanoid machines carry trays of food to the tables.
In the kitchen, two large blue robots with glowing red eyes specialize in frying, while another is dedicated to making dumplings.” *

Okay guys…I’m glad you thought a little bit there at the end about what a robot waiter might work out. As a veteran of the industry I can tell you that, no, you do not HAVE to have a college education to do what we do, but for those of us who are really good at it, it does provide a decent living. It has become more and more difficult due to the current economy, but i do love what I do (and I have a college education.)
When I began in the industry almost 20 years ago, my rate of pay way $2.15 an hour plus tips. It was explained to me that server generally make 45 percent of the minimum wage and at the time that wage was 5.85 per hour. Here it is 20 years later and I still make the same hourly rate. Inflation has increased, cost of living has increased, everyone else’s wages have increased, and yet servers still sit at around 2.15 per hour in the majority of the states.
However, I am not averse to automating some parts of the biz. I think robot dishwashers would be just fine. Robot bussers and food runners might work, too. They are meant to be in the background of a restaurant…almost providing the mystique of the magical appearance and disappearance of your meal.
So, thanks for rethinking your early stance. We do love what we do. We love meeting you and ensuring you have a great experience. We revel in seeing you after-dinner O face.
