The grieving family of Julion Evans brought him to a Tampa church to get a proper funeral. A church pastor agreed to speak at the service, but he ended up reneging upon learning that Evans was a gay man. And they learned this a day before the funeral was supposed to take place.
Pastor T.W. Jenkins reportedly agreed to the service, but the day before the funeral he noticed the obituary, in which Evans was identified as gay. He then called up Evans’ mother and informed her that it would be “blasphemous” for him to allow the service at the church, since it professes a very anti-gay marriage message.
Jenkins explained, “I try not to condemn anyone’s lifestyle, but at the same time, I am a man of God, and I have to stand up for my principles.”
Evans’ family and partner ended up holding the service at the same funeral home that handled the wake.
