Mad Men returns with season 7, episode 3, “Field Trip.” Betty seems to give voice to this episodes theme with the question, “Why don’t they love me?” Or perhaps Bobby has the season’s theme with the line, “I wish it was yesterday.” Don returns to the firm, and instead of receiving the Don Draper hero’s welcome…he gets something much less grand. Don sinks to a new low, as we pity his position– but why is he still there? In contrast, Betty wonders why her mothering isn’t valued much, but it seems to be pretty clear why to the audience. Dawn and Joan are also different and elevated from the way we’ve seen them before, and Peggy is having her own issues as things change. Megan and Don’s relationship and its longevity come into question– are they not supposed to be together? Is the relationship worth holding onto? Is anything we’re used to?
