Was it a twirling pencil or something more sinister?
That’s the question that hovers over the story of Ethan Chaplin, a Vernon, N.J. seventh-grader who, last week, was told he could return to Glen Meadow Middle School only after he received a psychological evaluation.
According to News 12, Chaplin said he was sitting in class, spinning a pencil with a pen cap on top when a fellow student told his teacher, “He’s making gun motions, send him to juvie.”
After the incident, Chaplin’s dad, Michael, said his son was effectively suspended pending a psychological examination, which the middle schooler passed.
The school tells a different story.
Vernon Schools Superintendent Charles Maranzano told HuffPost he couldn’t discuss the specific incident because of privacy laws, but he did say “no school in the state of New Jersey or nationally would leap to a school suspension for twirling a pencil. That’s not what the basis of our actions are.”
Instead, Maranzano said the student was not suspended, but was told he could return as soon as a doctor completed a psychological evaluation and determined the student posed no threat to himself or others.
“Our actions are always based on what’s best for the health safety and welfare of all the students,” Maranzano said. “We’re responsible for their mental and physical health and safety and security. When a student misbehaves or displays actions that are non-conforming or don’t meet our expectations, it causes us some concerns.”
Maranzano also said, in the wake of several deadly shootings, schools are being especially careful.
“I don’t want to be the one who failed to act when there were warning signs being demonstrated or displayed,” Maranzano said.
Michael Chaplin told InfoWars about what his son had to undergo during the psychological evaluation.
“The child was stripped, had to give blood samples (which caused him to pass out) and urine samples for of all things drug testing,” Michael Chaplin said. “Then four hours later a social worker spoke to him for five minutes and cleared him. Then an actual doctor came in and said the state was 100 percent incorrect in their procedure and this would not get him back in school.”
Maranzano said Chaplin is back in school.

“Ethan shouldnt even be able to get a gun” Ethan shouldnt be able to get underage booze or drugs as well, but im sure they are just a text away for him. Arming teachers probably isnt the best course of action because how do we know these people are any more qualified to have a weapon around hundreds of screaming pissy disrespectful ass holes but saying maybe an officer or a metal detector in a school is a bad idea is a bit off the other topic of safety. Who wants to send their child to a school that they feel like the child is at risk? You seem a bit dis-attached from society but since you also hit on educating students in a better way then we should focus on a complete overhaul of the education system to make math and history and other subjects that only a small portion of people use after school be electives and make the final years of school be more preparing people for life. Students know what a co secant is but cant balance a check book or figure out their own taxes, they can write a large essay in proper format but cant even critically think well enough to break down an easy mode fight on a video game meant for children.
You are on the wrong side of this argument. Not only is believing the word of the one student in fear of getting in trouble, while ignoring other students eye witnessing his actions you say that we should on the tiny budget children have spend more money on a psychiatrist on staff? If not the nurse who took 2 years of college to learn how to treat physical ailments now has to preform a mental analysis on a student that if done incorrectly might result in the death of other students? This mentality is what keeps parents blaming teachers for bad grades and now their children, and if we want more resources in the average school we need to put more than 4% of our budget into education. Across the US they are cutting classes and programs that don’t go along with the core curriculum due to lack of funds, as higher officials in the school are making more than they ever have without ever teaching a day in their life. Your suggestions are like trying to put a single band aid over a massive stab wound… and you end up putting it on the wrong spot….
