You guys missed the really important point here: colleges. Most of the cities listed are, to some significant degree, college towns. Provo (BYU), Boulder (University of Colorado), the San Jose area (Stanford), Ann Arbor (Michigan), San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly), the San Francisco/Oakland area (UC Berkeley), and Lincoln (Nebraska) are all heavily influenced by the universities in town. I think educational presence has a huge impact on citizens’ happiness.
Also, Fort Collins has CSU.
I think the reason why cities in conservative religious states, like this in Utah, is well ranked, is because they’re considering the size of the city, but I confess that it would be very hard for me to live in a too small city, I was born and raised in São Paulo, one of the biggest cities in the world. As for San Francisco, the price probably don’t help the city that much, but the city is overpriced exactly because standard of the standard of life it provides, the same happened with Vancouver BC, the city got overpriced exactly because everybody wanna live there, we can also say the same about Manhattan.
BTW, you mentioned that you like Latin boys, Ana… contact me, I’m Brazilian. lol ;-)
So Provo, UT is home of the Mormon Missionary Training Center (MTC) and is home to a ton of Mormons and also this beautiful temple.

I was born in Provo… grew up in Orem spent most of my life in Salt Lake City, Utah. I’m not sure why Provo is rated #1…. honestly. Utah is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. if you can ignore the religious aspect and just enjoy the provo river, provo canyon, Sundance ski resort… it’s amazing. As a teenager I was able to ride my bike to the provo canyon trail and then jog up or roller blade up the trail. When I moved away I realized not everyone has such a beautiful background to grow up in. Google Bridal Veil Falls… absolutely beautiful. If you visit Utah make sure you make some time to visit all the wonders of Provo Canyon. Squaw Peak, Bridal Veil Fals, jog the Provo Canyon trail, kayak the upper and lower Provo river.
I’m part Italian, and just wanted to say – where did you think Latin men came from before South America? :P We’ve got Spain, Portugal, Italy and Romania! Enjoy you’re trip to Europe!
