Peeing in a swimming pool may not be as innocent as it sounds … or feels, according to Chinese researchers.
In a study published in Environmental Science and Technology, researchers found uric acid and chlorine combined to produce the gas nitrogen trichloramine or NCl3, which can cause irritation in the mucous membrane and even acute lung injury.
Previously, a 2006 study by Belgian researchers indicated there may be a possible link between the chemical and a rise of childhood asthma cases.
Jang Li, professor of applied chemistry at China Agriculture University and co-author of the study, told Quartz the uric acid can also create cyanogen chloride, another poisonous gas.
So think before you pee. That warm feeling could be someone else’s bad day.
