  1. Alright! I am a native West Virginian (and I also live in the state, and am currently attending Marshall University)… That being said, I have to say I’m a little surprised we’re on the ABSOLUTE bottom of the list. I feel like I’ve been so many places in the mid-west and South that are simply worse. However, I do see that there are an abnormally amount of unhealthy people here, and we have quite a high level of obesity and drug use. A STAGGERING amount of drug use.

However, we also have one of the greatest Buddhist Monasteries in the US, and having worked in the Music Festival industry and traveling across the country. There’s nowhere I would rather be than at the Bhavana Society. Now, I have noticed that a lot of the people at the monastery come from around the US/world, and a small amount of my fellow West Virginians are as open-minded as myself. I have worked hard not to have an accent, to educate myself, and to stand apart from others around me. On campus is most CERTAINLY different than the rest of the state, and some of our cities (Huntington, Morgantown) are shaped by the cultures of the school. Morgantown is a great place to be a hippy!

It is unfortunate that such a beautiful place has been tainted by poor education, drug use, and ignorance. I must conclude that it is in fact our state government’s system that has failed us, as well as the stigma that goes along with us Hatfields. We’re all cousins, and we’ll probably shoot you for ginseng (sang’).

I’m more depressed that we’re on the bottom of the list, than I am about actually living here though.

Will I eventually leave the state to live elsewhere? Yes… Will it be in the United States? Most likely not. With the direction our country is going in, I find a lot of places more hospitable to the average non-CEO person. Wage inequality, lack of free education, and proper medical treatment (for attainable costs) simply aren’t in the cards in our near future.

I would like to conclude that just because the State as a whole has been ranked at the bottom, I have had some amazing times, and amazing friends in this State. It is a shame that the beautiful hills of WV have been turned into squalor, and the industries that flourish here are mostly dirty ones.

But come here and say we’re not happy to our faces, see what happens then! >:P
