*An anchor for the English language network RT — a Kremlin-controlled news outlet whose coverage on the crisis in Ukraine has been, er, selective — went off-script Tuesday morning and condemned Russia’s incursion into the Crimean peninsula. At the end of her show, Abby Martin, host of Breaking the Set, asserted her strong disagreement with Russia’s actions…* How did RT respond? The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down.

Don’t be silly Cent. RT being slanted pro Russia is no different from a corporate sponsored news media being slanted pro corporate. If you watched Abby’s latest show you would’ve seen her clarify she respectfully declined RT’s offer to go to Crimea. RT culture is not the dictatorship you are making it out to be. Another RT anchor followed in Abby’s rebellious footsteps and resigned on air stating “I can’t be part of network ‘that whitewashes’ Putin’s actions” then read RT’s very reasonable statement in response – Ms. Wahl’s resignation comes on the heels of her colleague Abby Martin’s recent comments in which she voiced her disagreement with certain policies of the Russian government and asserted her editorial independence. The difference is, Ms. Martin spoke in the context of her own talk show, to the viewers who have been tuning in for years to hear her opinions on current events – the opinions that most media did not care about until two days ago. For years, Ms. Martin has been speaking out against US military intervention, only to be ignored by the mainstream news outlets – but with that one comment, branded as an act of defiance, she became an overnight sensation. It is a tempting example to follow.
When a journalist disagrees with the editorial position of his or her organization, the usual course of action is to address those grievances with the editor, and, if they cannot be resolved, to quit like a professional. But when someone makes a big public show of a personal decision, it is nothing more than a self-promotional stunt.
We wish Liz the best of luck on her chosen path.
It’s obvious to me that you with the majority of your “self celebrating American colleagues” (Glenn Greenwald) are Russophobic and prescribe the news in a way that is consistent with that view.
P.s. Is TYT struggling for hits? Because lately a lot of your content seems to be centered around sex and porn etc with provocative photos of half naked women.
every day I listen to TYT and to “Breaking the Set” with Abby Martin :)
