There’s a reason why people are protesting the academy awards, and why you might see so many green keyed profile pictures and avatars. You probably noticed the irony of the VFX studio, Rhythm and Hues, going bankrupt even though they ended up winning the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. This is just one example of many visual effects studios and workers being put shut out of business, despite extensive, excellent work. Why is this happening, and how can visual effects artists use a strange anti-piracy law crafted by the Motion Picture Association Of America lobby itself to stop it? Kim Horcher, Tim Frisch, and Andrew Fogel discuss.
