“A Northern California high school’s decision to order students wearing American flag T-shirts to turn the garments inside out during a celebration of the holiday Cinco de Mayo was appropriate, a federal appeals court ruled Thursday.
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the school officials’ concerns of racial violence outweighed students’ freedom of expression rights. Administrators feared the American-flag shirts would enflame the passions of Latino students celebrating the Mexican holiday. Live Oak High School, in the San Jose suburb of Morgan Hill, had a history of problems between white and Latino students on that day.
The unanimous three-judge panel said past problems gave school officials sufficient and justifiable reasons for their actions. I think the kids wearing the American flag shirts were just doing it to be an ass to the other students. It would have been nice if the other kids were like “yeah, we’re American too” and left it at that, but that’s not how kids think. The teachers were just doing this to stop any fights. It’s not like the Mexican students were wearing Mexican flags.
Wearing the Mexican during Cinco de Mayo has NOTHING to do with ‘civic pride’!
Civc pride in America, is the flag of your town, state or nation.
NOT the flag of another nation.
Cinco de Mayo is not an American holiday, is not recognized as a date of importance to Americans, and has NO standing for legal purposes.
The instigators are those who fly flags of other nations.
If you want to celebrate it with legal justification, GO BACK TO MEXICO.
So Irish shouldn’t wear green on St. Patrick’s Day or wave Irish flags at their parade? Ridiculous. Because we have immigrants in our country, their national holidays eventually worm their way into our national culture. and you know what?? They’re usually a party. As in a fun time.
Here’s what woulda been nice. If the /white/ students had worn something Cinco de Mayo on that day! I like tacos….Why’s everybody got to be such haters…Embrace the differences, it’s literally what makes our country great.
