Former Salt Lake City mayor and Justice Party presidential candidate Rocky Anderson provides a devastating history lesson, describing a few of the brutal post-World War II examples of US imperialism. In 1953 the CIA staged a coup to overthrow Mohammad Mosaddegh, the popular and democratically-elected Iranian prime minister, to keep him from nationalizing Iranian oil. Then in 1954, at the behest of the United Fruit Company (now Chiquita), the CIA overthrew popular Guatemalan president Jacobo Arbenz, leading to decades of brutality, human rights abuses and the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Guatemalans.
More recently, US imperialism has focused its attention on the Middle East, with the prolonged war in Afghanistan, the illegal war in Iraq and frequent drone strikes in four sovereign nations as just a few of the most prominent examples. All this from a nation that purports to support democracy and self-determination around the world.
