  1. Quick note TYT: You should be careful of your usage of the term “hacker”, as it has different cultural meaning. Traditionally, a “hacker” is more accuratly defined as “An enthusiastic and skillful computer programmer or user.”

  2. In my country the Zimmerman defense would have to prove that use of lethal force was reasonable self-defense in this circumstance. They would have to prove that Zimmerman OBJECTIVELY was in danger of his life. Whether Zimmerman THOUGHT he was in lethal danger would not be a valid justification for the self-defense statute. It would only count towards what degree of murder he could be charged with.
American attitudes to weapons and use of lethal force concerns me.

  3. I think Zimmerman will get charged with manslaughter at the most. There’s no proof that he went after Trayvon Martin with the intent to shoot and kill him, but there IS proof that Zimmerman’s recklessness is what led to the shooting. He followed Trayvon after being told not to by the police dispatcher, his injuries were not life-threatening and he’s a proven liar (claiming he was hit 25 times when he showed no injuries consistent with that, saying he shot Martin [who was apparently sitting on Zimmerman and pummeling him] from below but his shirt had relatively little blood, etc.). Basically, there’s no proof that his life was legitimately in danger.

But I think there IS a possibility that he’ll be acquitted. The exact confrontation is totally murky and nobody knows for sure what truly happened: who threw the first punch, what they said to each other before the physical altercation, not every eyewitness agrees on who was screaming for help, etc. So even if the jury is convinced that Zimmerman is guilty of manslaughter, they might have to acquit him because of reasonable doubt. Kind of like how the Casey Anthony jury was convinced that she killed her little girl, but they had to acquit her because there was too much reasonable doubt (no cause of death, no proof that she intended to kill Caylee, nothing) to convict her of first-degree murder.

Whether Zimmerman is a racist doesn’t really matter much since it doesn’t mean he had ”ill will”. Maybe he’s racist, maybe he’s not. But I think that, ultimately, he was a guy who had a huge hero complex, ended up getting into a situation he couldn’t handle reasonably, freaked out and overreacted by shooting that poor kid because he erroneously thought he was gonna get seriously hurt or killed. I think he should be convicted of manslaughter, but don’t be surprised if he’s acquitted.

    1. Also, it’s really annoying how people are focusing on the ”Zimmerman is racist!!” angle and ignoring two things:

      1. When this first came out, people weren’t pissed because they thought Zimmerman was racist. We were pissed because the police fucked up by automatically assuming Trayvon (the victim) was the instigator and running a toxicology report and criminal background check on HIM instead of Zimmerman. THAT made us believe – probably correctly so – that the police department was being racist in handling the case, especially with the evidence at the time suggesting that Zimmerman’s life wasn’t in danger at all. That injustice was undone when they finally arrested and charged him.

      2. We were also pissed because of the Stand Your Ground laws that have weaker standards for self-defense and disproportionally hurt black people. The amount of justifiable homicides in ‘Stand Your Ground’ states is higher than in states without these laws; states with them are 13.6% for justifiable homicides, and 7.2% are justified in states without these laws. In ‘Stand Your Ground’ states, white-on-black shootings are several times more likely to be ruled ‘justifiable’ than white-on-white or black-on-white shootings.

I just hope there aren’t any riots. Those seem to happen every time a racially-charged trial doesn’t go the way we want it to. Rioting just makes people look stupid and you end up ‘reinforcing’ racists’ views of black people being violent. Peaceful protests, people. Peaceful protests.
