  1. Just watched (Mon. Dec. 12) a video by the Wall Street Journal Opinion talking about DAPL from the energy industries viewpoint. I was taken about by the assertion that the protesters had been shooting bullets, setting cars on fire, and STAMPEDING BISON toward the construction workers! Anyone who was there see any bison? Seems like someone would have gotten that on video! Looks like an example of irresponsible reporting with the only source being the people holding the guns. Need to run video 24 hours a day! The woman does make a point about there being 14 pipelines crossing the Missouri already…. Let’s be sure to give both perspectives and let the viewers make up their own minds.

  2. Never think that making comments to a major newspaper is a useless exercise or waste of time. Every little bit counts. WSJ published two sentences of my comment on Obama’s decision.

From the Wall Street Journal 10-point email on Tuesday, Dec. 6th.

    READER RESPONSE

Responding to yesterday’s question on the Obama administration denying a permit needed to complete the Dakota Access pipeline, Cathy Learoyd of Texas said: “President Obama’s decision is the right decision ethically and morally… and legally…The pipeline is also financially a bad deal for its investors who will never make any money on it.”

Here’s the full comment I made:

By denying the permit to DAPL to drill under Lake Oahu and the Missouri River, Obama may have a last laugh against legacy-busting Trump. Trump as an investor in DAPL would clearly be in violation of the Emoluments Clause and be impeachable if he or his administration reverses Obama’s decision. Obama’s decision is the right decision ethically and morally … and legally as unceded land. The Pipeline is also financially a bad deal for its investors who will never make any money on it.

  3. Cenk, you say Obama wasn’t acting out of political concern, but by law. You also gave credit where credit is due. Those feel contradictory. Why does he deserve praise for following the law? I feel that praising Obama after DAPL is finally halted is missing the primary point: he was “letting it play out” for months as people were shot with freezing water at the behest of a corporation in a crystal clear case of environmental racism, where his “letting it play out” was political code for, “I am going to wait to see where the cards fall, and then make the politically expedient choice.” We ought not be praising Obama, we should be praising every single protester who forced him to listen, as the protesters realize we can’t just passively trust that Democrats are always going to have our best interest in mind, rather voices must be loud and persistent. I believe we need to always keep in mind that the government exists to serve the needs of the people, not the other way around: they work for us, not corporations, so to venerate and give thanks to the government for listening implies that they rule us in the first place. Likewise, we must recognize why the most outspoken politician on DAPL was the one that can’t be bought – Bernie Sanders – as countless beloved Democrats were completely missing in action and even refrained from comment.
Meanwhile, it is amazing how all of a sudden mainstream media gives DAPL more attention only now after it is safe to do so… Mainstream media, just like our purchased government, has to calculate the cost and benefit, always being careful to not challenge the status quo even in cases of clear injustice.

  4. Bethany, is that true? Awesome! Was it Standing Rock’s native tribes’ legend or a more general one? If you have the time at some point to share a good article or video link, I’d be much obliged. I googled but didn’t come up with anything great / in depth. Thanks for sharing!????

  5. Cenk you should have made Wes consider being agnostic if you were right about Trump winning the primary and the election. Thats what pisses me off about “religious people” they only use it when it works in their favor. He is discrediting all the hard work HUMANS have put into this movement by saying it was Jesus who did this lol.

  6. “The elders often repeat at Standing Rock, when people of different races and identities – literally, the “four winds” – come together as is occurring now on that hauntingly beautiful landscape, their collective force can blow away even the strongest obstacle to healing and change. That at least is a vision through which a broad and inclusive progressive vision can be articulated.”

  7. Jesus still has a long way to go to make up for the genocide they allowed the white, Europeans to perpetrate on the native folk of the great land.

  8. This is a victory, and we have earned it, but I don’t believe for ONE SECOND that Obama is doing anything other than buying time for his corporate sponsors. Both the company and Obama are hoping (because they are both IDIOTS) that this will make the protectors and the veterans disperse, at least partially, so that new dirty tactics can be tried against the remnants.

  9. Question for anyone who saw the last Old School with Wes… was he serious about “coming to Jesus”? I thought he was kidding.

    1. Wes just sort of mentioned it. Cenk didn’t really press him on it on OS, although he didn’t seem to know whether to believe him or not.

  10. The problem isn’t in the fact that there is an idiot who acted upon fake news, the real problem is half the country will still believe in that this sex trafficking ring is still running and Hillary is implicated and no matter how much reporting is thrown at it they will not yield an inch.

With fake news people still don’t get it, Fox news isn’t a right wing echo chamber anymore, it is now seen as part of the establishment media covering up real news and scandals. Some of the most serious challenges to Trump came from Fox news people and they were attacked for telling the truth because in the words of a Trump surrogate “Facts don’t matter, what people feel matters”.

Like it or not a large segment of the population, on both sides but more right wing than left, lives in a post fact society.

    1. The obvious solution is: “tell the facts in a way – and with a political framing – that makes people care and feel something”. That is why I support progressive news.

ANY way of telling the news comes with bias and narrative, either hidden or blatant (and that is what makes people care). The key is to understand all this and take full advantage of it.

  11. Trump won’t listen to the interests of native Americans because they don’t count to him. 4000 veterans will definitely count. How is he going to oppose them? send in the national guard? Against those vets and police and firemen? Massive praise to the native nations for remaining peaceful and channeling Ghandi. It inspired the people who do count to come to their table.
As for Obama acting now? The game hasn’t changed at all. Lawless law enforcement on one side, peaceful snowball throwing protectors on the other. The protest hasn’t changed since it started. There is no argument you can make now that you couldn’t make a month ago that would justify a policy position of “let it play out” to permit denied. What has changed is the veterans showing up. Might makes right. Unfortunately the vets had to force his hand. If right makes might this permit would have been turned down a long time ago.

    1. Many thanks to all who helped with Standing Rock, most especially those who have been protecting the water since April. Cenk did his part by sending Jordan there and his reportage during the main show. Jordan did a fantastic job of reporting on the scene. Wes organized, along with other vets, a tremendous showing of on the scene support for the water protectors, which may have had a great influence in the decision to not grant the permit (at least temporarily). Didn’t see Michael doing any of that; he did an adequate job of reporting on Trump campaign when Jordan went to Standing Rock. Shout out to Emma Vigeland and Eric Byler for their reporting with TYT Politics also – great job.

  12. The Standing Rock decision brought me back to TYT news today after a long absence, best I’ve seen Cenk in a while. Loved the show today – justified my membership. Now I’m going to catch up with more missed shows and the post games. Thank you Cenk.

  13. If the electoral College does indeed confirm a different republican, or even get close to, we might start to see some real bipartisan action on repealing the EC. So this’ll be interesting to watch.

  14. Don’t you think Trump’s appointments of Carson to HUD and DeVos to Education are part of the goal to eliminate those departments? What’s next? Koch for Energy, or maybe the EPA?

    1. John Cornwall, I would suggest the interim goal would be to siphon as much taxpayer money as possible through privatization into corporate coffers, then once the programs are in the hands of corporations the agencies could be easily eliminated. Or, once programs are privatized, then a rump agency could be tolerated as window dressing. What happens to the agency is speculation. The privatization part is something to count on happening or at least be attempted. Of course, the losers of privatization are the constituencies the programs are designed to help.

    2. Yup, same with Tom Price, all he ever wanted to do was eliminate Obamacare, and now he’s in charge of that agency.

      1. I agree that those appointments are highly controversial for obvious reasons, but John’s arguments why Carson is unfit are ridiculous. The lack of experience has never been a reason to not to appoint a person. One of the famous examples was Hillary Clinton who is just a lawyer in terms of education and her experience in international politics was just lying about being shot at in Bosnia, and yet she was made the head of StateDep.

        1. You’ve conveniently ignored 16 years of her experience

“U.S. Senator from New York from 2001 to 2009, First Lady of the United States from 1993 to 2001”

          Troll on! Dr. Seuss

          1. That experience had nothing to do with actual diplomatic work or with managing a giant bureaucracy such as StateDep or having proper eduction in the field.

            Troll on! MacCarthy.

  15. wait… i just heard from standing rock that energy co is actually drilling ?? in defiance of army corps of engineers
    statement??
    true or not??

  16. The money set aside for Standing Rock, for the unseeded territory, should be awarded to the Standing Rock Sioux as rent for the land the US has been holding. Standing Rock Sioux should continue to get rent on all the land that will not/ cannot be returned. It’s the right thing to do. The US Government stole their land, distributed it and cannot give it back. We need to pay for our governments indiscretions against the native people of this great Nation.

  17. Cenk! You know why it’s the black snake right? It’s part of the native legend. The black snake would come and destroy the land but Mother Earth would be saved by the Rainbow Warriors. :)
