Concerning “tariffs”. Ohio’s 12th district is horribly gerrymandered, and no one can tell if they’re in it or not. I went to vote early for O’Conner after checking to see if I was in the 12th, only to be told at the voting station that I’m actually in the 15th. The majority of my town is in the 12th, but my neighborhood was carved out.

I always disagreed with calling it democratic socialism simply because I knew it made it WAY too easy for the other side to spin. I know the GOP and corporate Dems will always go after progressives but we didn’t have to hand them a talking point on a silver platter. Every second that people have to explain what democratic socialism means is a second not spent talking about how they are going to help change a broken system
The next time a conservative starts screaming their head off about Venezuela, ask them this simple question: Why did their currency experience hyper-inflation? Please explain this to me in detail. Then, calmly explain to them that the value of their currency was pegged to a commodity who’s value plummeted: oil. The social programs didn’t cause this, they simply could no longer afford them. This will never happen in the US because we have a strong, sovereign currency and can never go bankrupt or experience hyper-inflation.
Actually the social programs did cause the Venezuelan collapse. The government there was spending money that it didn’t have and will never have on programs that did not work and did not add anything in terms of productivity to the economy and was printing money after everyone stopped purchasing its debts.
By the way Oil is 4 times as much as it was 3 years ago and Venezuela is worse off now than then.

You’re right, they did try to print their way out of it, but their economy was way too dependent on the price of oil. One can hardly blame the social programs. They simply could not afford them anymore. My point, which you apparently missed, was that this can never happen in the US.
And how did they lose their reserves in the first place?
The way Chavez ran the economy was radically different from Maduro. Chavez actually spent money on real projects and cut spending on nonsensical welfare programs (and there are many in Venezuela). Maduro used the Central Bank as his piggy bank to buy votes by literal handouts (one of the causes of the inflation: Too much money chasing too few goods) and when it failed to win him elections legitimately he burned his country’s constitution.
As for why it can’t happen in the US, actually it can. Remember the 80s? 14% inflation? The US economy is balanced, its deficits (no matter how big) are stable and cash in the form of FDI is flowing. Also it helps that everyone is buying dollars because it is the dominant international trading currency. This is why despite 7 trillion dollars in loans to the banks (erroneously called “bailouts” because the banks paid them back with interest, sometimes are loanshark levels) and 4 trillion in QE did not cause inflation.
If anything went wrong during QE in particular (say a self inflicted wound like not extending the debt limit) or China simply stopping buying US debt inflation will rise albeit not to Venezuelan or even Turkish levels.
