Love the show but I seriously dislike the phrase ‘ you can’t have your cake and eat it also’. Of course I can. Why bake a cake or buy one if you can’t eat it??? * Boggle*. BTW love the show.
It simply means that once you have eaten your cake, you do not have it anymore., So, you cannot eat your cake and still have it, at the same time.
I know this is the wrong day for me to comment on, but on the 2nd hour of tomorrow’s show I won a t-shirt.
Thank you.
I think their email for contacting them about that sort of stuff is memberservices@tytnetwork.com but I could be wrong.
I like to hear people get passionate about maintaining your principles, calling out hypocrisy, and standing up for our
Constitution; it’s why I am a member of and listen to TYT. And I agree with everyone on the show, and almost all of the commenters, that something is going on between Trump and the Russians.
If you actually want to know what it probably is, you owe it to yourself to read “Come Nineveh, Come Tyre”, a book of political fiction, written by Allen Drury (of “Advise and Consent” fame) as the fifth novel in his monumental series that began with “Advise and Consent” (made into a movie starring Henry Fonda and Walter Pidgeon). To really understand the import of “Come Nineveh, Come Tyre” (published over 45 years ago), it’s best if you read the first four books- every one of which is a page turner for anyone who is even a little bit of a political junkie. That’s asking a lot, as each of Drury’s books is 500 pages or so, but I guarantee that each one (with the possible exception of the second one, “A Shade of Difference”, which focuses on race relations in the US and activities at the United Nations) will not only hold your interest totally, but will give you a lot to think about. The first book takes us through the bruising confirmation process for a Secretary of State, whose apparent feeling is that the Soviet Union is not nearly as bad as other folks think it is (“Advise and Consent”); in this book you will meet almost all the major characters that you will see in the next five novels and you will, I guarantee you, learn more about how the Congress works than you ever thought you knew.
The second book, as I mentioned, is something of a detour, but if you want to know more about how the United Nations works (or doesn’t) it will be of great value. But it also takes us through the opening moves in the Presidential candidacy of the Governor of California- a politician who will be one of two central figures in the next three novels.
In the third book, “Capable of Honor”, you’ll get to know the Senior Senator from Illinois intimately, and see the beginning of his own candidacy for the Presidency. You will also attend their party’s convention. (I might point out that nowhere, in any of the six books, are the labels “Republican” or “Democratic” used, a very neat trick, that I did not realize had been used until I was well into the third novel.) If you want to go behind the scenes at a major party political convention, you will love this book. But, more importantly, you will discover the major point of contention in the politics of at least one party’s candidates- should the United States deal with the Soviet Union firmly and with honesty, or give the the continual benefit of the doubt and avoid confrontation at all costs- which, as it turns out, was Drury’s main theme all along. What makes me think that Drury was clairvoyant is the fact that the Soviet Union attempts to sway the delegates at the convention for its own purposes- certainly echoing the entire Mueller probe.
I cannot say too much about the fourth book, “Preserve and Protect” without ruining the whole story for you, but I can say that the conflict over how to deal with the Soviet Union continues through that book, via machinations both public and private, and the book ends with the fall Presidential campaign just getting underway. In this book, I can also say that the Soviets continue their efforts to disrupt things, just as they apparently did in 2016- although they do so in even more spectacular fashion.
It is at the end of “Preserve and Protect” that Drury finally has his characters confront the main question: which method of dealing with the Soviets- a firm and unflinching, principled stance or a more “flexible realpolitik”- is more likely to bring the United States through the Cold War (which, you must remember, was at its height as Drury was completing his magnum opus (the last of the six books was completed before Reagan took office).
Then, through an artifice that I, personally, think is a tour-de-force, Drury uses the last two novels to explore the possible outcomes of each of these approaches. To put it in simplistic terms, in “Come Nineveh, Come Tyre”, a person with an uncanny resemblance to Donald Trump becomes President, while in “The Promise of Joy”, someone you might imagine to be Bernie Sanders (or a more principled Hillary Clinton) takes the office. In each, Drury explores what might happen. You will find that, at least in “Come Nineveh, Come Tyre”, that you will be asking yourself if the Soviets didn’t get hold of it and use it as their current playbook. Many of today’s headlines are actually IN that book.
So, I encourage all you- all of you at TYT and all of use who listen in and comment= to do yourselves a favor and invest the time to read these books. The second book, I thought, was the weakest, but perhaps that’s because I couldn’t relate to either the race relations or United Nations story threads. (Some reviewers actually don’t consider it to be one of the actual sequels to “Advise and Consent”, although I do. Still and all, it moved the overall story forward.)
So where do you find these books? No, I don’t sell them (although I have both hardbound and paperback versions of all six; with the exceptions of Advise and Consent, which was published in 1960 and given to me as a gift in 1962 when I mused out loud to my parents that perhaps I had been wrong to have been a Nixon supporter two years earlier, and A Shade of Difference, which was another gift in 1964 on my High School graduation, I bought my copy of each one on the day it hit the bookstores- that’s how anxious I was to know what would happen next. Sadly, the books went out of print in 1999, but, happily, they became available again in 2014- in paperback and e-book formats.
I’ll be upfront with you; if you don’t like to read, or if you suffer from a short attention span, then these books may not be for you. But I will also guarantee that the investment of time (and a small amount of money) will be well worth it. I can also predict that you may find yourself saying things like: “Just one more chapter, and then I REALLY have to get some sleep” at 2AM (I certainly did). When you finish Come Nineveh, Come Tyre, you will wonder, as I do continually, whether Allen Drury wasn’t a time traveller.
I only wish I could read them again- for the first time.
, then
Thank you. Now I know what my next books will hopefully be.
You guys should check out Courtney Tritch running for Congress in Indianas 3rd district against Jim Banks who she outraised with individual donor contributions!
I saw her at a recent protest that took place in my city against Jeff Sessions, shes awesome!
This is just another way of trying to recruit Biden into the race to challenge Sanders. Biden is likable, but he’s just not a leader.
Unfortunately when the right says that the left is steeped in identity politics, they’re right about the media and the leadership, whom use it whenever it’s convenient, discarding it when it comes to actually representing the people.
Older Democrats really care about Bernie not being a Democrat. I live in Indiana where you don’t have to register by party and can vote in either primary, but only one. The older Democrats I know want to close the primaries. They are very scared about outsiders mucking in the primaries. Bernie won Indiana.
Cenk is talking about the Bobby doc on Netflix. My husband & I just watched it a couple weeks ago!
At a certain point in the doc, we looked at each other and said, “Bobby sounds just like Bernie!”
Which makes sense, since at that time, Bernie would have been a young guy and was probably in support of what Bobby was saying. Bernie’s political views were being formed, and he’s remained of that mind-set since.
Bernie is just continuing along RFK & MLK’s paths.
But no… voters aren’t interested in that…
CNN thinks Biden is the way to go in 2020.
Wow.
CNN’s poll has Bernie in 5th behind JOE BIDEN?!?
I call bullshit. That looks completely fabricated.
WHO did they poll? Democrats over 50? over 60? over 70?
Only CNN or MSNBC viewers?
Trump absolutely will win in 2020. OR Pence. If DNC keeps going this way, and Trump is in jail, it WILL be Pence in 2020. They are beyond clueless. Young progressive voters will NOT vote for fucking Biden. Or Kamala or Cory “Where’s the money?” Booker. This is such bullshit it is amazing.
This is SO depressing.
Fight back with ideas. Love it. Hey could you post a link to the Bobby Kennedy documentary you’re watching?
It’s on Netflix.
Hi, there. We are loyal members and watch faithfully. Love the show.
Here are some compliments and some criticisms:
Ana is elegant, purposeful and truly awesome (original meaning) when standing up against right-wing opinion. She truly shines like few other female political commentators on the left. We watched her remain poised and confident as she creamed Ann Coulter, among others! Rendering the news, on the other hand, seems to make her nervous. You set a high standard on TYT. Reporters are not there for their egos, but almost reluctantly sit before the camera serving the news. Ana seems narcissistic about her desire to shine. One can’t just forge ahead on ego power; for example, she repeats what has just been said and uses the obvious to barrel into a tense tirade. Ana could just be herself and not worry about topping her co-panelists.
Much like concentration camp clowns, Cenk has a way of being a clown who counters the buffoons in office. One has to accept that Cenk is in a class alone based on his years as a journalist and the complex matrix of his fields of interest and mastery. Thus he is capable of juggling disparate thoughts even as he holds his audience as his equal. This is rare, indeed.
Keep up the excellent work!
I have a criticism about your comment :) : everybody that has a desire to shine, to do better, does it for personal reasons, but calling it narcissistic has a negative connotation. The definition of narcissist is “excessive interest in or admiration of themselves”. Ana prefers being low key in the looks department so… not exactly narcissist.
Ana has the desire to inform people. After 6 years of watching every single show, I can say that she knows a lot more than before. Also, everybody on the panel wants to voice their opinion. I prefer 2 people, max 3, to avoid somebody not having enough time to talk during the show.
Also, she looks stunning particularly today.
Ana is the textbook definition of a narcissist.
How refreshing. It’s been so long since some troll singled out Ana for an obviously untrue smear. Please, I’m sure you also have some very basic criticisms (that are clever by your standards) about her personal appearance to accompany that opus of yours.
where is the block button in this place?
reading troll’s comments is a waste of time and they accomplish nothing.
I watched CNN and MSNBC before and got a fraction of information in comparison with TYT.
Ana is great for TYT and she is gorgeous. Any criticism probably comes from a jealousy dark corner.
She would love to hear you call her gorgeous and believe that people are jealous of her, which rests my case.
No, she looks fine to me. I liked her old hair color and nose better but that’s just my own personal preference, not hers obviously.
Just watched an horrific ad by a Koch brother called History of Freedom. Apparently an advert for his seminar network that will help people fight against the corrupt system of crony capitalism. Oh the irony!! How disgusting. I only came across it as I was signing on to get the TYT page. I had to watch. It’s … I need to go barf. Please call out his hypocrisy. On another note, I love TYT and am encouraging people to join every chance I get. Keep fighting for us.
Harry Enten is just another 538 hack
no biden
Hydreigon101, agreed.
Sometimes you just gotta accept that the magic moment, if there was one, has passed. However, I think Bernie has yet to reach his peak.
