Agree with all the love and respect for Brooke as presenter — more please!
I think the talking point about America as a “constitutional republic” is a lot simpler: “democracy” sounds like “democrat/democratic” and they want to characterize our system using the root for “republican” rather than “democratic.” I think this is also why they say “Democrat” rather than “Democratic” party.
BrendoNYC, your analysis of Democrat/Democratic party makes sense. I think you are oversimplifying with your first point, though. Remember, the Republicans have a special talent for writing voter suppression laws. Why? They fear loosing power, ant they must cheat to stay in power. It is democracy they fear, not Democrats, as they have demonstrated in most elections going back to when the Democrats had 1,000 more elected offices than they do today. Their mantra of “constitutional republic” is a distraction from the power of the people and a temporary balm for their fears.
People! How did you not snap, the reason that dentist is trying to say we’re a constitutional republic and not a democracy-is because HE HAS POWER! He’s a congressional representative, and he’s saying, “Give up, motherfuckers, I’m making the decisions and you’re following orders!” You guys usually catch the subtext, but not this time-Where’s my t shirt??
Brooke crushed it, and her lipstick was ON. POINT.
Sorry folks, this is about yesterday’s show.
I urge you to consider who is really behind the Russian hacks of our elections and answer the following: Why? For What Purpose? Who Does it Benefit? No, I don’t know the answer!-)) but investigation needs to go deeper than “To interfere in our elections!”
Have you read this? I urge you to review this article about Brexit which really notes the extreme Right’s agenda for further looting the coffers for their own gains. It states that this is the true purpose of Trump’s European tour and that Disaster Capitalism will be the method. Of course Trump’s going to Putin next … https://www.commondreams.org/views/2018/07/13/trumps-visit-marks-start-shock-doctrine-brexit
Thank you for reading my message.
Brooke did a great job of presenting. Perhaps we have can have two female leads for both hours now and let the men sit back for a change. ;)
I loved Brooke Thomas as commentator! She did a great job! Please keep her on.
Also, was it just my imagination, or was Ben a little annoyed with everything today? In Canada, we’d say, “Who spit in his mac and cheese?”
That’s not at all true, but I’ve always wanted to say that.
We are a representative democracy; or we are a democratic republic. Whichever label, it means we vote. Sometimes directly, for example on state ballot initiatives. Sometimes indirectly, when we vote for representatives to make and pass, or not, legislation.
The electoral college was created to ensure that those in power stayed there; to limit the reach of our representative democracy. It’s a political pressure regulator, and a valid topic for debate. Keep it, or not?
Our bicameral legislature is, of course, an attempt to balance powers between large and small states. As a resident of Oregon, I appreciate having equal representation in the Senate, as well as making sure that the overall population of each state is represented in the House.
On other topics:
I remember OWS; I remember that I was inspired and had hope, because it lasted so much longer that I thought it could, and really brought attention to the issue.
Video examples showing protests in UK are by Islamists, specifically shows Anjem Choudary. Who is jailed under their terrorism act. I feel like this was mistakenly added to segment.
Brooke was AWESOME as always and now as a presenter! I love that TYT snatched her up! Also, Ana looked really tired/under-the-weather this hour and I hope she gets to rest this weekend ’cause I expect her back to 100% on Monday! Ana’s too strong to let this (admittedly awful) week keep her down! The Emmett Till story was sad and I hate to admit it but I was in the “we can’t be racist we have a black president” crowd and I now see how wrong that was. Now I’m just waiting for Obama to say “Emmett Till could have been me” so Republican heads can explode 24-7 on Fox “News” for the rest of the month. Sigh.
Republicans have been claiming that the US is not a democracy for at least 15 years, I would frequently hear that claim from right-wing college students, starting around the time John Kerry was running for President.
These students would try a gotcha question by asking professors and other students what type of country the US was. If the answer given was a democracy — gotcha! My response was always that we are a DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC, to which the right-wingers would… change the subject.
Piers Morgan told critics of his Trump interview to go “smoke some waccy baccy” lol
Piers is a d-bag. He just made himself look like the loud, blustering, blowhard that we expect. He should have been doing it on Fox.
Brooke is awesome leading the stories!
The news today, was sure to stress the blood vessels, but the show was really helpful.
:-) Completely loved this second hour. Brooke was great as the lead. Good conversation. I wish it was longer.
That wasn’t the first time that he wouldn’t let Ash speak. He is a big proponent of nationalism as well. In another segment from a few months ago, he does the exact same thing to the exact same girl regarding forcing people to sing the national anthem in schools in Britain. He also lies, and says that we do it here in America. I guess he doesn’t know the difference between the national anthem and the pledge. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0H-BykoktI
Having worked as a dental assistant for 5 years, I get that working in dentistry, you learn to read a patient’s body language since the patient often may not be able to speak for a variety of reasons such as being numb, having gauze in their mouth, having a dental dam, having a bite block to prop their mouth open, etc. You learn to see if a person is in pain, feeling impatient, relaxed, etc by their eye brows and to a lesser extent body posture (grabbing the chair and white-knuckling through the experience). We also learn to understand grunts and mumbling better than most.
I get how you would be more experienced and better at interpreting grunts and mumbling, but I doubt you read body language better than most. It doesn’t take much to understand that white-knuckling the chair means the patient is feeling discomfort… Children learn very early to read facial expressions and when they learn to talk they can tell you if a person is feeling good or bad.
Did you have to pick Anjem Choudary as you poster child of anti-Obama protests? Smart move. really makes the progressive case strong for moderates who might be on the fence.
Great panels today guys.
I remember what @BenMank77 was saying about @MarkTLive. You’ve got a good thing going but when Mark turns up, everything gets even better.
It’s the same with @BrookeOnAir.
I agree 100 percent!
